Starting Wednesday, Yelp, the go-to online resource for restaurant feedback, is now supplementing user reviews of dining experiences with venues’ county health inspection scores and letter grades.
Yelp is partnering with HDScores to bring the health scores to its users. The company says it has taken data from hundreds of government websites in more than 42 states to compile health scores that can be used by Yelp.

Every food-lover’s nightmare is waiting eagerly at a restaurant only to be met with disappointment when the food isn’t anything like what you imagined from the menu description. Luckily, a new feature will allow users to view restaurant hygiene scores on Yelp.
For decades, cities have regularly inspected restaurants to ensure food safety, providing this information publicly to citizens. Unfortunately, this information is often buried on clunky “dot gov” websites beyond the easy reach of consumers. Today, we are thrilled to announce that we are taking our LIVES program national.
Beginning Tuesday, Yelp will provide “hygiene scores” for restaurants in New York, California, Texas, Illinois, and Washington, DC. The company plans to continue rolling out the feature in the months to come, eventually covering 750,000 restaurants in large metropolitan areas throughout the country.
Yelp announced it would be rolling out health scores nationally last month. Yelp is working with a third party, HD Scores, which converts Cal code violations into a numerical score for counties that have a placard system.
